Device Closure Procedure: ASD / VSD / PDA

Overview

Device closure procedures are minimally invasive interventions used to treat certain congenital heart defects, such as atrial septal defects (ASD), ventricular septal defects (VSD), and patent ductus arteriosus (PDA). These procedures typically involve the placement of a closure device to seal the abnormal opening or passage in the heart.

ASD Closure (Atrial Septal Defect):
  • Defect Description: An ASD is a hole in the septum (wall) between the heart’s atria (upper chambers).
  • 0Procedure: During the ASD closure procedure, a catheter is threaded through blood vessels to the heart. A closure device, often made of metal and fabric, is then deployed to cover and seal the ASD.
VSD Closure (Ventricular Septal Defect)
  • Defect Description: A VSD is a hole in the septum between the heart’s ventricles (lower chambers).
  • Procedure: Similar to ASD closure, VSD closure involves the insertion of a catheter to the heart. The closure device is placed to cover and close the ventricular septal defect.
PDA Closure (Patent Ductus Arteriosus)
  • Defect Description: PDA is a persistent opening between the pulmonary artery and the aorta, which should naturally close after birth.
  • Procedure: The PDA closure procedure is performed using a catheter to access the heart. A closure device is then positioned to block the abnormal blood flow through the ductus arteriosus, promoting its closure.
General Steps for Device Closure Procedures:
  • Access: Typically, access is gained through the femoral vein or artery, and a catheter is advanced to the heart.
  • Imaging: Fluoroscopy and echocardiography are often used to guide the catheter to the precise location of the defect.
  • Device Deployment: The closure device, usually delivered through the catheter, is placed at the defect site and released.
  • Follow-up: Patients usually undergo follow-up imaging to ensure proper placement of the device and to monitor for any complications.
